TRIBUTE TO

David Sandercock

Gromfest founder

On behalf of all those who have competed or are competing in the Rusty Gromfest we thank David Sandercock for starting something very special in Australian surfing.

A man like David comes along once in a blue moon, he gave his life to help and encourage others and took very little in return except for the inner joy that comes from selfless service.

Dave saw his last Rusty Gromfest last year in 2005, it was the 10th anniversary of the event and even though he was unwell he came to the beach and was stoked to see everyone enjoying the social nature of the event he created.

He started surfing on the first modern foam boards in South Australia, a member of the Sand & Sea club.

David was known as a smooth goofy foot stylist who liked to keep up with the progressive new turns & tricks.

He helped school surfing get established in South Australia along with Sue Bennett.

He travelled with the Australian team at the first World School Surfing titles in California in the 80's.

Dave always helped the groms.

Later moving to Lennox Head he was a member of Lennox - Ballina Boardriders along with his sons Tim, Caleb and Joseph.

David founded the Rusty Gromfest in 1996 and created a different vibe on the beach.

Working hard to establish the event as Australia's best grommet competition.

Bringing families of our nationwide surfing communities together at an annual event.

Creating a red carpet experience for the groms.

David has many friends all over Australia who will miss his effervescence, warmth, compassion, giving and positive energy.
